IN THE SCARBOROUGH SOUTHWEST REGIONOur Scarborough Southwest: Neighbourhoods & Areas of Interest
In August of 1793, the wife of Lieutenant Governor Simcoe recorded the following in her diary:
“we came within sight of what is named in the Map the high lands of Toronto – the shore is extremely bold and has the appearance of Chalk Cliffs … they appeared so well that we talked of building a Summer Residence there and calling it Scarborough.”
It seems these cliffs reminded them of cliffs by the English Yorkshire town of Scarborough, and soon this became the official name of our former township.
